Papua New Guinea is located in the south-west region of the Pacific Basin and lies to the north of Australia. With a land area of 461,690 square kilometres, Papua New Guinea is a mixture of tropical forests, savannah grass plains, big rivers and deltas, swamps and lagoons. The country has a population of approximately 6.5 million people (2007) and this is expected to rise to18 million people by 2050, a population growth of 2.5% per year.
